Derrick Thomson is an experienced and innovative municipal leader with more than 30 years of experience in city-building, change management, budget administration, strategic planning, and innovation.
As Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Guelph, Derrick is responsible for the daily operation of one of Ontario’s fastest-growing municipalities and its 2,300 employees. He oversees all administrative functions of the municipality on Guelph City Council’s behalf. Derrick also serves as Chief Executive Officer of Guelph Municipal Holdings Inc.—a corporation focused on public asset management in support of municipal innovation, revenue generation and community prosperity.
Derrick’s vision is to build on Guelph’s culture of excellence by fostering innovation and modernizing services, while applying a long-term approach that ensures financial stability. His leadership philosophy centres on trust, respect and providing opportunity so that employees can learn and grow. He believes in engaging citizens and partners in the municipal decision-making process, and in operating with citizens’ perspectives in mind.
Derrick joined the City of Guelph in 2013. Before serving as Chief Administrative Officer, he was the Executive Director for Community and Social Services. Former roles include Chief Administrative Officer for the Township of West Lincoln, and Manager of Business Services for the City of Brampton.
When not serving the citizens of Guelph, he enjoys life with his wife Andrea and their two children, Luke and Brynn.
